UNSW's International Projects (IP) Division has been awarded a US$1 million Asian Development Bank contract to develop a pension plan for India's informal labour sector. IP has also worked with the University's Centre for Sustainable Built Environment on a solar housing project in Himachal Pradesh.

Project Description: Implementation of low cost solar passive housing in rural areas of Himachal Pradesh. Capacity building of the Project Management Cell (PMC) and of Master Artisans in effective policy development and implementation in this area of energy and environmental performance; facilitating ongoing monitoring, evaluation and showcasing of passive solar buildings, including evaluation of local appropriate technology materials for construction of passive solar houses; Training design professionals in other 'hills' State area of northern India

Project Name: Pension Reforms for the Unorganised Sector

Project Description: The objective of the technical assistance is to (i) prepare a pension reform plan that will address the requirements of the unorganized sector and people who are not presently covered; (ii) establish a social safety net system that provides access to the poor, either as a separate pension plan, or to the extent feasible, integrated or linked with the present system; and (iii) consider the impact of the proposed changes on the existing employees provident schemes and the employees pension schemes. Development of a pension scheme, which may be voluntary or involuntary in nature to be contributed by the members of the unorganized sector and capable of absorbing all others who wish to participate. Development of a regulatory regime on prudential lines that will infuse the core areas of pension funds management.
